Not Your Everyday Existentialist Band

Kyle Preston isn’t your average guy. While growing up in Wooster he continually struggled with the push-pull effect between accepting and rejecting religion. “There are lots of things I battle with about religion, but then there are so many things I love about it,” he said. After moving to Columbus several years ago, he went through a metamorphosis that entailed leaving two bands, ending a relationship, getting a new job, and cutting his hair. In February of 2008 he created progressive rock solo project Atoms Inception. His first album The Ten Commandments poked fun at the original Ten Commandments.

After several months of playing acoustic sets in small bars, Kyle wanted Atoms Inception to evolve into a band and recruited drummer Eric Olander and bassist/keyboardist/sampler John Huffman to join him. Their collective sound results in hard melodic rock with heavy sampling and industrial tinges. “We have a ton of equipment for just three people and tend to scare sound guys,” Kyle laughed. He lists Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Sigur Ros, and Bjork as major influences.

The band records and engineers everything in Kyle’s bedroom. “I’m so unbelievably personal that I like shutting myself off for a little while,” he said. They’re working on a new album called Delicate Illuminations that will be self-released in early 2010. Kyle hopes to book a few shows outside of Columbus but mostly wants to nudge people to think about the meaning of life. “I guess I’m just trying to find peace within all of the chaos that’s happening in the world,” he said.
